Paper Description
This paper is concerned with interpreting and protecting the Māori cultural landscape, especially in relation to current heritage legislation, the Treaty settlement process, and issues of iwi/hapū development.
Itwill investigate how present-day engagements with Māori heritage are mediated by colonial history, private property rights, and statutory intervention and policies – especially the Antiquities Act 1975, the Treaty of Waitangi Act 1975/85, the Conservation Act 1987, the Resource Management Act 1991, the Historic Places Act 1993, the Marine & Coastal Area (Takutai Moana)Act 2011, and the Pouhere Taonga Act 2014.
The course will take a critical look at how we might better understand both ancient and modern Māori culture and society. It aims to develop the theoretical knowledge and research skills needed to achieve these objectives, especially through the interdisciplinary lenses of archaeology, ethnography, oral tradition, and archival history.
